Why Your Google Business Profile Is Only Half the Job

2026-07-12 · 5 min read

Google Business Profile is brilliant. It puts your business name, phone number, opening hours, and reviews right in front of someone searching for what you do. It is free. It works. And more local businesses have set one up in the past three years than in the previous ten.

But here is the bit most people miss: your Google Business Profile is only half the job. It gets you found. It does not close the sale. That bit still happens on your website. And if your website is not pulling its weight, all those profile views are going nowhere.

The gap nobody talks about

Picture this: a customer searches for a plumber near them. Your Google Business Profile shows up. Good photos, solid reviews, a 4.8 rating. They click through to your website. And the site is slow, the phone number is buried, and the last blog post is from 2019.

What just happened? Your GBP listing did its job perfectly. It got the click. But your website dropped the ball. The customer went back to Google and clicked on the next result. That is the gap. And it is costing local businesses enquiries every single day.

We see this pattern constantly. A business owner spends hours polishing their GBP listing. Responding to reviews. Adding photos. Updating holiday hours. Then they wonder why the phone is not ringing. They never look at the website the profile is pointing to.

What a GBP listing actually does (and what it cannot do)

Your Google Business Profile does three things exceptionally well:

It gets you seen. When someone searches for a service you offer in your area, your profile can appear in the local pack, the map, and the knowledge panel. It is the most visible piece of free real estate Google gives to local businesses.

It builds quick trust. Reviews, photos, and a complete profile signal to a searcher that you are a real business with real customers. In under five seconds, they can see your rating, read a review snippet, and check your opening hours.

It gives people ways to contact you. A phone call button, a directions link, a website link. All in one place. No searching, no digging.

Here is what it cannot do: it cannot explain your services in detail. It cannot show a gallery of your best work with proper context. It cannot tell your story, answer common questions, or explain why you are different from the three other businesses with the same star rating. It cannot build the kind of trust that gets someone to pick up the phone and call you rather than the competitor who is fifty quid cheaper.

That is what your website is for. And if your website is not doing those things, your GBP listing is sending traffic to a dead end.

The three things your website must do after the GBP click

When someone lands on your site from a Google Business Profile, they are not browsing. They are comparing. They have already seen your name, your rating, and probably your competitor's too. They are now on your site to answer one question: why you?

Your website has seconds to answer it. Here is what needs to happen.

1. Match the promise. If your GBP listing says you are a roofer in Blackburn, your homepage needs to say the same thing immediately. Not three paragraphs down. Not tucked in a footer. The headline. A customer who clicks through from "Roofing Services in Blackburn" and lands on a page that says "Welcome to our family business" has already started drifting back to Google. They wanted a roofer. Give them a roofer.

2. Make contact effortless. Your GBP listing has a call button that works in one tap. Your website needs to match that. A phone number that is visible on mobile without scrolling. A contact form that asks for the minimum. An address that confirms you really are local. If someone has to hunt for your phone number on a five-page website, they will not hunt. They will leave.

3. Show proof, not promises. Your GBP reviews say people like you. Your website needs to show why. Photos of real work you have done. A few sentences about a job that went well. A clear list of what you do and do not cover. Anything that proves you are the genuine article and not just good at collecting reviews.

How to check if your gap is costing you

You can do this in ten minutes, right now. No tools, no budget, no agency.

Step one: Search your own business on Google. Find your GBP listing. Look at it like a customer would. What does it promise? Roofing in Blackburn? Plumbing in Clitheroe? Salon services in Burnley? Write that down.

Step two: Click through to your website. Does the homepage immediately deliver on that promise? Is the same town mentioned? Are the same services obvious? Do the photos match the ones on your profile? Or does it feel like a different business?

Step three: Try to contact yourself. On your phone, not your laptop. Can you find the phone number without scrolling? Does the contact form work? Does the address match the one on your GBP listing?

If any of those three steps felt clunky, you have found the gap. And that gap is where your enquiries are disappearing.

The businesses that get this right

The local businesses that win are not the ones with the flashiest websites or the biggest advertising budgets. They are the ones where the GBP listing and the website tell the same story. Same location. Same services. Same phone number. Same feel.

When a customer searches, finds your profile, and clicks through to a site that immediately says "yes, you are in the right place, here is what you need, here is how to reach us," they stop comparing. They call.

We build websites with this gap in mind from day one. Every Fehu site is designed to work with a Google Business Profile, not instead of one. The profile gets you found. The site closes the sale. Both need to be right. And when they are, the phone rings a lot more often.

If you are not sure whether your profile and your site are working together, we will check for you. Takes about twenty minutes and costs nothing. No pitch, no pressure. Just an honest look at where your enquiries might be leaking.
