Local SEO. You have probably heard the term. Someone told you it matters. Maybe your accountant mentioned it. Maybe a competitor is doing it and you are not. Maybe you have just been ignoring it because it sounds like marketing and you would rather be doing actual work.
Fair enough. But here is the thing: local SEO is not marketing. It is not advertising. It is not some complicated thing you need a degree to understand.
Local SEO is simply this: making sure people can find your business when they search for what you do, in the area where you do it.
That is it. Everything else. The tools, the tactics, the checklists. All of it is just detail. The core idea is dead simple.
What happens when someone searches for a plumber
Imagine this. Someone in Clitheroe has a leaking radiator. They grab their phone, type "plumber near me" into Google, and hit search.
Within half a second, Google has to answer one question: which plumbers, out of all the plumbers in the area, should appear at the top?
That decision is what local SEO is all about. It is Google asking "who is the best match for this person, in this place, right now?" And your job is to give Google the clearest possible answer.
The three questions Google wants answered
When someone does a local search, Google is trying to answer three questions about your business.
One: who are you?
This means your business name, what you do, and how to contact you. It sounds obvious. But a surprising number of business websites make this hard to find. Google wants it all in one place, clearly stated, with no confusion.
Two: where are you?
Google needs to know where you operate. Not just your office address, but the areas you serve. A plumber in Blackburn who also covers Accrington and Burnley needs to say so. Google cannot guess.
Three: are you legitimate?
This is the trust bit. Google looks at things like your Google Business Profile, your reviews, how long your website has been around, and whether all your business details match across the internet. A business with 30 genuine reviews and a consistent phone number everywhere looks more trustworthy than one with no reviews and three different phone numbers floating around.
That is local SEO in three questions. Everything else. The blog posts, the keyword research, the meta descriptions, the schema. All of it is just helping Google answer those three questions faster and more confidently.
Why this matters more for local businesses than national ones
If you sell products online and ship nationally, SEO is a different game. You are competing with everyone in the country who sells similar products.
But if you fix boilers in Burnley, or fit kitchens in Clitheroe, or cut hair in Colne, you are not competing with the whole country. You are competing with maybe five or ten other local businesses. And the good news is, most of them are not doing the basics right.
Getting found locally is a much smaller hill to climb than getting found nationally. The work is simpler. The competition is thinner. And the payoff: more phone calls, more enquiries, more work. It is immediate.
The two simple places to start
You do not need to do everything at once. Start with these two things. They are free and they make the biggest difference.
First: your Google Business Profile. If you have not set one up, do it today. It takes about 20 minutes. Fill in every field Google asks for. Add real photos of your work. Ask happy customers to leave you a review. Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing people see before they even visit your website.
Second: your website's title tags. Every page on your site has a title tag. It is the blue clickable text you see in Google search results. If your homepage title tag just says "Home" or your company name, you are invisible for the searches that matter. A good title tag says what you do and where you do it. Something like "Plumber in Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley | Your Company Name" tells Google exactly who you are and where you operate, in one line.
Those two things alone will put you ahead of most local competitors who have not touched either.
You do not need to learn all of it
Local SEO can get deep. There is a whole industry of people who make it sound complicated so you will pay them to handle it.
But most local businesses do not need the complicated stuff. They need the basics done properly. Clear information. A decent website. A Google Business Profile with real reviews. Consistent contact details across the internet.
The rest is refinement. Nice to have. Not essential.
And if you do not want to deal with any of it, find someone who will do the basics properly without charging you agency prices or locking you into a twelve-month contract.
