Local SEO: The Three Things Every Trade Business Needs to Get Right

2026-06-29 · 5 min read

Local SEO sounds complicated. There are agencies charging £500 a month and tools promising first-page rankings in 30 days. It all feels a bit much for a plumber, a roofer, or a salon owner who just wants their phone to ring.

Here is the thing. You can ignore about 80% of what the SEO industry talks about and still do better than most of your competitors. After eleven years running a real local business alongside building websites, we have seen what actually works. It comes down to three things.

1. Your Google Business Profile

This is the listing that shows up when someone Googles "plumber near me" or "hairdresser Clitheroe." It is the map result with your business name, star rating, phone number, and opening hours. For local searches, it is probably more important than your actual website.

The good news: it is free and you control it. Here is what to do this week:

  • Claim it. Go to google.com/business and search for your business name. If it is there, claim it. If it is not, create it.
  • Fill in everything. Every field. Opening hours, services, service area, phone number, website link. Google trusts complete profiles more than half-filled ones.
  • Add real photos. Photos of your work, your van, your team. Not stock images. A plumber with twenty photos of actual pipework they installed will outrank one with a logo and nothing else.
  • Ask for reviews. Politely. Send a text after a job with a direct link to leave a review. This is the single biggest lever you can pull. And it costs nothing.

That is it. Keep it updated when your hours change, reply to reviews, add a photo every few weeks. It takes ten minutes a month and it compounds.

2. Your Name, Address, and Phone Number: Everywhere the Same

This sounds boring. It is boring. But it matters more than you would think.

When Google sees your business name, address, and phone number (what the industry calls "NAP") on your website, your Facebook page, your Checkatrade profile, your Yell listing, and everywhere else, it checks whether they all match. If one listing says "Unit 4, Riverside Estate" and another says "4 Riverside Estate, Clitheroe," Google treats that as two different businesses. Your ranking drops because Google is not sure which one is the real you.

The fix is simple. Pick one version of your business name, address, and phone number. Write it down exactly. Then check every place your business appears online. Directories, social profiles, trade association pages, anywhere. And make them all match. Character for character.

There are tools that do this for you, but for most small businesses a Saturday morning and a cup of tea is enough to get it sorted.

3. One Proper Page for Every Service You Offer

Most trade websites have a single "Services" page that lists ten things on one screen. That is a missed opportunity.

Google ranks pages, not whole websites. If someone searches for "boiler repair Blackburn" and you have a dedicated page called "Boiler Repair Blackburn" that explains exactly what you do, which boilers you work on, and how to book, you have a much better chance of showing up than a competitor whose boiler information is buried halfway down a generic services page.

You do not need fifty pages. Start with the three or four services that actually bring in money. Write a page for each one. Include what the service covers, roughly what it costs if you are comfortable sharing that, where you cover, and a clear way to get in touch. Write it like you would explain it to a customer in your kitchen. Plain English, no buzzwords.

This also filters out the wrong kind of enquiry. If someone reads your boiler repair page and still asks for a combi boiler the next town over, they were never going to book anyway.

That is it. A proper Google Business Profile. Consistent name, address, and phone number everywhere you appear online. One dedicated page per service. None of these things require a marketing agency or a monthly retainer. They all compound over time. And together, they put you ahead of about 80% of the local businesses that Google is trying to rank.

We know this because we have done it for our own cleaning business. The phone rings. The enquiries come in. It works.
