Three Free Google Tools That Help Local Businesses Get Found (And Most Owners Ignore Them)

2026-07-01 · 5 min read

Google gives every business owner three free tools. Not trials. Not freemium upgrades with a locked gate after 30 days. Properly free, properly useful, and available in about five minutes.

Most local business owners never touch them.

We have run a real business for over 11 years. In that time we have watched tradespeople and salon owners spend hundreds on ads, directories, and "SEO packages" from cold callers, while the three most powerful marketing tools Google offers sat there, free, completely ignored.

Here they are. What they do. And why you should spend one afternoon setting them up.

1. Google Business Profile

You know when you search for "plumber near me" and a map appears with three businesses on it? That is the local pack. The businesses in it did not pay to be there. They filled in their Google Business Profile properly.

Your Google Business Profile controls what shows up on Google Maps and in local search results. It is your shop window on Google. It shows your phone number, opening hours, photos, reviews, and a direct link to your website.

Most people set one up when they started the business, half-filled it, and forgot about it. That half-filled profile is still working. Imagine what a fully filled one would do.

The bits worth your time right now:

  • Photos. A profile with 10 recent photos gets more clicks than one with a single image from 2019. Upload an exterior shot so customers can find you, a few work examples, and a photo of you or your team. Real people, not stock images.
  • Category. Pick carefully. "Plumber" is better than "Plumbing service" because it matches how people actually search. You can add secondary categories too.
  • Reviews. Ask real customers. A quick text after a job with a link to your review page works. Do not offer incentives and do not fake them. Google catches both.
  • Posts. Inside your dashboard there is a posts section. You can publish short updates that appear right in your listing. Even one a month signals to Google that your profile is active.

Setup time: 30 minutes. Cost: nothing. Ongoing time: 10 minutes a week replying to reviews and posting an update.

2. Google Search Console

This one is invisible to customers. It is for you. Search Console tells you exactly how people find your website on Google.

It shows you:

  • What search terms bring people to your site. You might think customers are searching for "emergency plumber Clitheroe" but Search Console might show you that most of them are actually searching for "boiler repair Clitheroe." That tells you which service page to write next.
  • Which pages get clicks and which do not. If your contact page ranks on page four of Google and your about page ranks on page one, swap the content that is working.
  • Whether Google has any problems with your site. Broken pages, slow-loading content, pages Google cannot read. Search Console flags them all with a plain-English explanation.

Setting it up takes ten minutes. You verify that you own the site by adding a small code snippet or uploading a file. After that, Google starts collecting data automatically. You just log in and read the report.

Most business owners have never seen theirs. The data is already there. Google has been collecting it since the day your site went live. You just have not looked at it.

Setup time: 10 minutes. Cost: nothing. Ongoing time: 5 minutes a month checking the top search terms and any errors.

3. PageSpeed Insights

This is the simplest of the three. You paste your website address into a box. It gives you a score out of 100 for how fast your site loads on mobile and desktop.

Why it matters: Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. More importantly, so do your customers. If your site takes six seconds to load on a phone, most people have already gone back to the search results and clicked the next business down.

PageSpeed Insights does more than give you a number. It tells you exactly what is slowing your site down and, in most cases, how to fix it. Some fixes are technical. Some are as simple as resizing an image that is too large.

If your score is above 90, you are in good shape. If it is below 50, your site is quietly losing you enquiries every day. You just cannot see them leaving.

Setup time: 30 seconds. Cost: nothing. Ongoing time: check it once a quarter, or after you add anything big to your site.

Why most owners ignore them

It is not laziness. It is that nobody told them these tools exist.

Google does not advertise them. Web agencies do not mention them because there is nothing to bill for. And most business owners have enough on their plate without learning about search console data and page speed metrics.

But these three tools are not technical. They are dashboards. You log in. You look. You act on what you see. A plumber who spends one afternoon setting these up will have better visibility than a competitor who has spent thousands on ads but never checked their Search Console.

The one-afternoon plan

If you do nothing else this month, do this:

  1. Morning: Google Business Profile. Claim it or log in. Update your photos, check your category, reply to any unanswered reviews. Write one post about something useful.
  2. After lunch: Search Console. Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your website, verify ownership. The data starts showing up within a day or two.
  3. Before you finish: PageSpeed Insights. Go to pagespeed.web.dev, type in your website, read the score. If it is below 50, fix the biggest issue it flags. If the issue is technical, get in touch with someone who can.

That is it. One afternoon. Three free tools. More useful data about your online presence than most business owners will ever see.
